George B. Karabin, 67, Of Bergenfield

BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- George B. Karabin, 67, a former Bergenfield councilman, died Friday, Nov. 20. 

Karabin was a graduate of Weehawken High School and St. Peter's College. 

Most recently, he was a vice president and program manager for Xerox Corp. in its EZPass Division and was director of EZPass for the state of New York. 

Karabin was active in the Bergenfield community, focusing his attention mainly on the town's youths. He worked with the PAL organization as an umpire, coach and director of the soccer program, creating the town's first indoor soccer program. He was an avid fundraiser for this organization. 

He was a member of Bergenfield High School's Football and Cheerleader Parents Association, as well as co-chairman of several Project Graduation parties. 

Karabin was involved in many political campaigns on the local, state and national levels. In 1988, he was elected to Bergenfield's town council. During his term, he served as fire commissioner and was instrumental in establishing Bergenfield's Fire Training Center. 

In recent years, he enjoyed vacationing with his wife and family at their beach home in Sarasota, Fla., and visiting casinos in Pennsylvania. He was a faithful parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. 

He fought a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer and during this time worked to raise more than $20, 000 to support the Lustgarten Foundation. 

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dottie; his children, Jeffery and his wife, Ann, Danielle and Alyson; his siblings, Judy Hamilton, Marianne (Steve) Hnatko and Donny (Ruth) Karabin; his brothers-in-law Cosmo DeSteno and his wife, Lidia, and Thomas DeSteno and his wife, Joan; and many aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Rose Karabin. 

All will gather at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S. Washington Ave. Bergenfield for the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Cremation will be private.
